What is Counselling like at Resilience Counselling Taupō?

Counselling is about you. It’s a safe, confidential space where you can talk about what’s going on in your life, how you feel about it, and what you might want to change. The focus is always on your needs and what matters to you.

Whether you’re looking for Taupō counselling, couples counselling, or a male counsellor in Taupō, the process is the same, you choose what to focus on and what you want from the sessions. You can tell your counsellor what you do or don’t want to discuss, and together you’ll decide how counselling works best for you.

  • A safe, non-judgemental space: You can talk openly without fear of judgement.

  • Someone really listening: Counsellors are trained to listen and help you feel understood.

  • Exploration and reflection: Counsellors help you explore feelings, identify patterns, and see things from different perspectives. They ask

  • Change focused (if you want): Some people like to aim towards or work on specific challenges; others just want a space to talk.

  • Different approaches: Counselling can be conversational, creative, or skill-based depending on what suits you.

What a first session is like

The first session is about getting to know each other and talking about how counselling works. Your counsellor will ask what brings you to counselling, what you’d like to focus on, and any concerns you have.

This is also where contracting comes in. Contracting is simply agreeing together how you’ll work. It usually covers:

  • Confidentiality: What stays private and any limits to privacy.

  • Session details: Length, cost, and how often you’ll meet.

  • Your aims: What you want from counselling (if anything) and how the counsellor will support you.

  • Boundaries: Things like cancellations and the counsellor’s role.

By the end of the first session, you’ll have a sense of whether the counsellor is the right fit and what the next steps might be.
